“Here is what change is saying to people who already have healthcare insurance and the employers who are providing it, we will work to lower your premiums by up to $2,500 per family per year.” – Presidential Candidate Barack Obama in 2008.
The hopes of affordability and accessibility filled the airwaves as proponents of the healthcare bill promised everyone change for the better. Instead, the Affordable Care Act has become the Pandora’s Box of medicine, spreading ill effects and despair as Americans deal with the fallout of terminated plans, higher premiums and unaffordable coverage.
Just ask Marie of Nebraska, who received a letter from her insurance company, stating that her plan was no longer being offered and that a comparable policy would be made available.
“I was paying around $81 a month, which came to about $243 quarterly. My deductible was $3,000,” she stated.
While Marie understood that her coverage would be more comprehensive – some of which she did not need or want – it was the sticker shock that had her outraged.
“My monthly premium jumped to $204 a MONTH, which works out to be $612 a quarter – that’s approximately 150% jump. Outrageous! I had a budget-friendly plan for a reason. Also, my deductible increased more than 100% as well to roughly $6500,” she fumed.
Marie, who calls herself a non-political person, refused to sit on the sidelines and be silent on this issue. “I didn’t get to keep the coverage I liked, and I am in danger of loosing the coverage I do have when the New Year hits, because I can’t afford it anymore. They’ve just caused someone with coverage to go without.”
For those who believe these claims of painful punches to the pocketbook are just murmurings from naysayers, take Jessica Sanford, who was so elated to receive insurance that she wrote the President explaining her life-changing experience of getting insurance for the first time in 15 years. Her hopes of coverage were soon dashed when the Washington State exchange informed her that they miscalculated her premium costs.
“But days, just really three days after she was mentioned by the president, Jessica Sanford started having problems, she was receiving letters from the Washington state health exchange,” reports CNN. “The first letter telling her that her tax credit was reduced, therefore, increasing the cost of her health care plan…, then she received a letter just last week telling her that her tax credit had been taken away all together…. She describes all of this as a roller coaster ride. Now she says she can’t afford insurance in Washington State because of the new developments.” ()
With all these tragic stories of “affordable” care that has gone wrong, it is time for the President to make good on his promise “to work to lower premiums” for Marie, Jessica and the rest of America, who simply want real affordable coverage, not unaffordable insurance that is masked by subsidies.
A full Repeal of Obamacare will do just that.
